Bailey was found huddling in some bushes along the East Coast Greenway bike trail in the area of Deli and Branch Streets on Monday, July 25, the Animal Rescue League (ARL) said. A Good Samaritan scooped up the one-year-old puppy in a blanket and brought him to the police station.

Bailey was later treated at an animal hospital in Charlestown then transferred to the ARL's Boston center. Caretakers determined Bailey was severely underweight, suffering from fur loss and was covered in scabs. He also tested positive for a parasitic illness called Giardia, which led caretakers to believe Bailey was previously living in unsanitary conditions.

Bailey is continually receiving treatment through medicated baths and a re-feeding plan, the ARL said. While he is not up for adoption just yet, the ARL wants to ensure that he is healthy enough to find a new home.

Meanwhile, the ARL and Malden Police are investigating this abandonment case and are asking the public for help. Anyone with information is asked to either contact ARL Law Enforcement at 617-426-9170 x110 or email cruelty@arlboston.org; or the Malden Police Department.
